Broadway Box Office: ‘Othello’ Leads Amid New Show Openings

Broadway experienced a bustling week with multiple openings, though the acclaimed revival of Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’ emerged on top, led by powerhouse actors Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal. The production at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre secured $3.179 million, with an impressive average ticket price rising to $382.92, reclaiming its status as the industry’s top earner.

Close behind was the highly anticipated drama ‘Good Night and Good Luck,’ featuring George Clooney, which grossed $3.135 million at the Winter Garden Theater despite a fully comped opening night that slightly lowered its overall box office earnings. Critics offered largely positive reviews for the show, which maintained an impressive average ticket price of $250.68.

Several other shows opened last week to mixed receptions. The revival of David Mamet’s ‘Glengarry Glen Ross,’ starring Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk, and Bill Burr, attracted significant attention and earned $1.8 million at the Palace Theater. Meanwhile, ‘The Last Five Years,’ headlined by Nick Jonas and Adrienne Warren, received mixed to negative critiques at the Hudson Theatre.

Comped performances, including the opening of ‘Boop! The Musical’ at the Broadhurst Theatre, contributed to an overall industry dip of around 3% compared to the previous week, yet Broadway remains up by 19% compared to last season’s totals.

Upcoming shows are preparing for openings before the Tony Awards eligibility cutoff on April 27. ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’ played to full houses at the Marriott Marquis Theatre, grossing $676,923 across four preview performances. ‘John Proctor is The Villain,’ starring Sadie Sink, also performed strongly, achieving full capacity at the Booth Theatre with a weekly gross of $370,701 ahead of its April 14 opening.

Following ‘Othello’ and ‘Good Night and Good Luck,’ Broadway’s top-grossing shows included longstanding favorites ‘Wicked’ ($2.5 million), ‘The Lion King’ ($1.98 million), and ‘Hamilton’ ($1.96 million).
