The Picture of Dorian Gray sets history-making Broadway box office record

Following opening to ecstatic reviews, the Sydney Theatre Company production of THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY, starring Emmy and Olivier Award winner Sarah Snook (Succession), in a new adaptation written and directed by Kip Williams, will extend for two more weeks.

The production, which opened on 27 March, 2025 at the Music Box Theatre (239 West 45th Street), will now play through 29 June, 2025.

Sarah Snook makes her Broadway debut playing 26 characters in this breathtaking adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s only novel. Critics hailed her solo performance as a tour-de-force, in Williams’ ingenious production.

“Sarah Snook goes fantastically Wilde!,” raved Deadline. “Equal parts acting masterclass, tech wizardry, illusion and clockwork stage management, The Picture of Dorian Gray marks audacious Broadway debuts by both the remarkable Sarah Snook and director-adaptor Kip Williams. Broadway can rejoice!” The Washington Post cheered, “Sarah Snook’s tremendous performance is among the year’s best. Kip Williams’ staging is a marvel of technology.”

Snook is best known for playing Shiv Roy in the hit series Succession, a role that earned her global acclaim. Over four seasons, she received an Emmy Award, two Golden Globe Awards and a Critics Choice Award for her performance.

I’ve never been shy about telling people that from the moment I saw Kip Williams’ extraordinary adaptation that I knew it simply had to be taken to Broadway. Following its success in London, and Sarah and Marg’s incredibly well-deserved Olivier Award wins we were even more emboldened to take the show to New York.

Producer Michael Cassel:

To have the show so extraordinarily well received is extremely exciting and a true testament to the phenomenal vision of Kip and his team and the singular performance Sarah gives each night.

New York Post:

A triumph! The sensational Sarah Snook wows in this breathtaking marvel of a play. She’s more volcanic than Vesuvius. The audience is wholly consumed.

Enrapturing audiences, the celebrated world premiere of THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY in 2020 extended twice in Sydney and toured to critical and audience acclaim throughout Australia. Last year in London, THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY was adored by critics and audiences alike and earned Snook a 2024 Best Actress Olivier Award and a Best Costume Design Olivier Award for Marg Horwell.

Williams’ interpretation of Wilde’s tale of beauty, excess, and a deal with the devil brings a striking resonance in our current era, holding a mirror to 21st century society’s narcissistic obsession with youth.

Kip Williams has revolutionised the stage with his use of ‘cine-theatre’

Kip Williams:

I am so thrilled with the incredible response to Dorian Gray here on Broadway, it’s like nothing I’ve experienced before. It has been so special to take this all-Australian production from Sydney, to London, and now to New York. To see Broadway audiences erupt into standing ovations each night is a dream come true.

Set and Costume Design is by Marg Horwell, Lighting Design by Nick Schlieper, Composition & Sound Design by Clemence Williams, Video Design by David Bergman and Eryn Jean Norvill as Dramaturg & Creative Associate. Production Stage Manager is Lisa Iacucci.

The Broadway production of Sydney Theatre Company’s THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY is produced by Michael Cassel, Adam Kenwright, Len Blavatnik and Danny Cohen, Daryl Roth, Amanda Lipitz and Henry Tisch.
