Broadway legends Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga lead a star-studded cast in ‘Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends,’ a lavish tribute celebrating the life and legacy of the late composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim. Produced by Cameron Mackintosh and directed by Matthew Bourne, the production is now captivating audiences at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in New York City following successful runs in London and Los Angeles.
Spanning the breadth of Sondheim’s influential career, ‘Old Friends’ showcases beloved classics alongside less-familiar numbers from musicals such as ‘Gypsy,’ ‘West Side Story,’ ‘Sweeney Todd,’ ‘Into the Woods,’ and ‘Passion.’ The show’s evocative stage designs immerse audiences in visual tributes to these iconic musicals.
Peters, renowned for her memorable roles in original Sondheim productions like ‘Sunday in the Park With George’ and ‘Into the Woods,’ delivers poignant renditions of ‘Send in the Clowns’ and ‘Losing My Mind,’ highlighting her enduring talent and emotional depth. Salonga, acclaimed for her role in ‘Miss Saigon,’ impresses as Mrs. Lovett in selections from ‘Sweeney Todd,’ and brings powerful energy to ‘Everything’s Coming Up Roses’ from ‘Gypsy.’ The duo also shines in their heartfelt performance of ‘Children Will Listen’ from ‘Into the Woods.’
The revue further benefits from a stellar supporting ensemble, featuring celebrated talents Beth Leavel, Bonnie Langford, Gavin Lee, Joanna Riding, Kate Jennings Grant, Jeremy Secomb, Jasmine Forsberg, and Jacob Dickey. While the carefully curated selection of songs inevitably omits some fan favorites, the overall production provides a rich, affectionate journey through Sondheim’s exceptional catalog, underscoring his continued impact on musical theatre.
‘Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends’ runs through June 15, celebrating one of Broadway’s greatest creative voices.
