Samantha Dodemaide and Andy Karl to join Broadway cast of MOULIN ROUGE

The Broadway production of Moulin Rouge! The Musical will welcome acclaimed Australian performer Samantha Dodemaide and Olivier Award winner and Tony nominee Andy Karl to its cast from January 28, 2025, at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.

Dodemaide, adored by Australian audiences for her roles in Wicked, Violet, and Chicago, makes her Broadway debut as Nini, a character she originated in the Australian production of Moulin Rouge!. She steps into the role following Sophie Carmen-Jones, whose final performance is on January 26.

Karl will take on the role of The Duke of Monroth for a limited engagement through July 20, succeeding Australian David Harris, who departs on January 26 and will return to the role on July 22. Karl, who is celebrated for his Olivier Award-winning performance as Phil Connors in the London production of Groundhog Day, recently reprised the role in a Melbourne run.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical, inspired by Baz Luhrmann’s iconic 2001 film, premiered on Broadway in 2019 after a Boston tryout. It earned 14 Tony nominations in 2020, winning 10, including Best Musical. Directed by Alex Timbers, with a book by John Logan and choreography by Sonya Tayeh, the musical weaves a soundtrack of modern pop hits into its tale of love and tragedy. Set in Paris’ famed Moulin Rouge cabaret, the story explores the ill-fated romance between the courtesan Satine and composer Christian.

The production’s creative team includes music supervisor Justin Levine, music producer Matt Stine, music director Julie McBride, orchestrators Katie Kresek and Charlie Rosen, and dance arrangers Levine and Stine.

Other contributors include scenic designer Derek McLane, costume designer Catherine Zuber, lighting designer Justin Townsend, sound designer Peter Hylenski, hair designer David Brian Brown, and makeup designer Sarah Cimino, with creative direction by Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin. Casting is by Jim Carnahan and Stephen Kopel.
