Jamaal Fields-Green is set to take over the lead role of Michael Jackson in the West End production of MJ The Musical at the Prince Edward Theatre next year. Fields-Green, who has previously covered the role in London, will step into the iconic shoes of the King of Pop from Monday, January 14, 2025.
Fields-Green’s casting is a historic one, as he becomes the only performer to have played Michael Jackson in three global productions: Broadway, the US national tour, and now the West End. Speaking about the opportunity, Fields-Green expressed his excitement, saying, “I’m deeply humbled and honoured to have the opportunity to perform in this show and role here in London. Ever since I made my debut in the West End earlier this year, something in the city has been calling me back. London – I’m excited to share my artistry and make some magic with you in this beautiful city. I hope to see you at the theatre, I promise you’re not going to want to miss it. Let’s party!”
The production is a thrilling exploration of Michael Jackson’s life, set during rehearsals for his 1992 Dangerous tour. Written by Lynn Nottage (known for Sweat) and directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, a Royal Ballet associate artist and the director of An American in Paris, the musical takes a behind-the-scenes look at Jackson’s life and creative process through a series of interviews with a visiting crew from MTV.
Fields-Green will join a talented ensemble cast, including Ashley Zhangazha as Joseph Jackson/Rob, Mitchell Zhangazha as Michael, Philippa Stefani as Rachel, Phebe Edwards as Katherine Jackson/Kate, Matt Mills as Berry Gordy/Nick, Rohan Pinnock-Hamilton as Tito Jackson/Quincy Jones, Matt Gonsalves as Alejandro, Jon Tsouras as Dave, Kieran Alleyne as MJ alternate and standby for Michael, and Kwamé Kandekore as the standby for MJ and Michael.
The production’s creative team includes scenic design by Derek McLane, lighting design by Natasha Katz, costume design by Paul Tazewell, sound design by Gareth Owen, projection design by Peter Nigrini, and hair and wig design by Charles LaPointe. Musical supervision is by David Holcenberg, with orchestrations and arrangements by Holcenberg and Jason Michael Webb. UK Casting is managed by Pippa Ailion and Natalie Gallacher.
