A stunning new project at the Wayside Chapel in Kings Cross will open tomorrow night.
Stories from the Wayside will uncover the throbbing heart beat that is Sydney’s underbelly. Never before have these stories been heard and never again will this show be performed.
“The Director, Dean Carey (Creative Director & founder of Actor’s Centre Australia) is working with a talented group of actors to give these rarely heard stories a voice”, producer Gus Anderson told AussieTheatre.com.
Stories from the Wayside has been written verbatim based on interviews from those in and around the Wayside Chapel. Audience members will be transported to the heart of the Wayside through gripping, irreverent and immediate stories set in a unique, theatrical setting.
The Wayside has provided unconditional love, care and support for people on and around the streets of Kings Cross since 1964 and is currently undergoing a $7.7 million renovation.
Press notes for the show read:
“Welcome to one of the most powerful and entertaining styles of theatre. Its purpose is to unlock the human heart, reveal the human psyche, reflect human filters and perceptions & unite us through empathy and understanding. The actor meets their interviewee and asks them about their life, the state of world affairs and the Wayside Chapel. Once interviews are conducted and audio recordings gathered, the actors work with the director to write the script verbatim from these interviews. The actors then reproduce their subjects’ voices with blowtorch accuracy – nothing is altered or changed – the audience receiving a direct download from these people’s lives, minds and hearts.”
The show is a unique, rare piece of theatre. Reality theatre has the potential to open minds, create connections, overcome barriers and even help move some mountains. Please, support the show that is helping the Wayside help those who have fallen through the cracks.
Stories from the Wayside Chapel opens on August 19 and plays until September 4.
