Opera Queensland Celebrates States Green In World Premier Tour of Lady Sings The Maroons

Lady Sings the Maroons, a love letter to Queensland, makes its world premiere in Caloundra on 28 April, marking the start of Opera Queensland’s much-anticipated 2023 regional tour.

Featuring works by artists like Gladys Moncrieff, Powderfinger, Savage Garden, Joe Geia, Kate Miller-Heidke and Harold Blair, Lady Sings the Maroons tells a story of Queensland through some of its most renowned songs.

Building on the great success of past tours, Are You Lonesome Tonight and Songs to Die For, the show will visit twenty towns from the Gold Coast to Proserpine, out to Mt Isa and back to Toowoomba.

The tour underlines Opera Queensland’s commitment and highly regarded connections to audiences across regional and remote Queensland.

The original concept for the show was developed by Opera Queensland’s CEO and Artistic Director Patrick Nolan and is being directed by Associate Artist, Laura Hansford.

It stars renowned vocalists Jess Hitchcock, Irena Lysiuk and Marcus Corowa with Musical Direction by Luke Volker, who all trace their roots to regional Queensland.

Sharing the inspiration behind the production, Mr Nolan:

This show mixes rock and roll and opera in ways that our audiences have come to love. Revealing the power music has to bring us together.

Music from Queensland had the power to transport audiences.

My Queensland, your Queensland and the next person’s Queensland are vastly different things and that’s reflected in the music that’s come out of this state.

Lady Sings the Maroons holds a mirror up to our extraordinary state with pride… a show that sings about the diversity of its people as we try to capture ‘our Queensland’.

Amateur singers in Caloundra, Bundaberg, Gladstone, Rockhampton, Roma and Toowoomba can join a community chorus to perform with the cast.

Opera Queensland also invites singers and musicians from other regional stops to join the cast at their respective performances as a paid support act.

Two special Lady Sings the Maroons performances are programmed as part of the Festival of Outback Opera in Winton and Long reach on 18 and 22 May.
