MY FAIR LADY Melbourne season announced to celebrate 70 years since its historical Broadway debut

Celebrating 70 years since its historic Broadway debut, Lerner and Loewe’s MY FAIR LADY will return to Melbourne in a landmark new season, opening in November 2026. The production will be the first major musical staged at Arts Centre Melbourne’s newly refurbished Ian Potter State Theatre, marking both a theatrical milestone and a symbolic homecoming for one of the most celebrated works in musical theatre history.

Few musicals can claim the cultural impact of MY FAIR LADY. From its triumphant Broadway premiere in 1956 to its celebrated Oscar winning film adaptation, the show has become a cornerstone of the repertoire, adored by audiences across generations. This forthcoming Melbourne season continues that legacy with a lavish recreation based on the acclaimed 2016 Australian production directed by Julie Andrews, which broke box office records when it premiered at the Sydney Opera House for the musical’s 60th anniversary.

Producer John Frost expressed his pride in presenting the anniversary staging in partnership with Opera Australia. He described the opportunity to bring such an iconic musical, featuring one of the greatest scores ever written for the stage, to the rejuvenated Ian Potter State Theatre as both meaningful and exciting. The production’s opening will signal a new era for the theatre following its extensive refurbishment, placing a timeless classic at the heart of the venue’s next chapter.

The celebration is heightened by a second significant anniversary. Opera Australia is marking its platinum 70th year, creating a rare double milestone that underscores the scale and importance of the 2026 season. Opera Australia CEO Alex Budd reflected on the musical’s original reception, recalling how it was hailed as wise, witty and winning upon its 1956 premiere. He noted that it set a new benchmark for the art form, and that seven decades later its brilliance remains undimmed. Presenting the work once more in such a milestone year, he said, honours a landmark of musical theatre that continues to delight and enchant audiences.

At its heart, MY FAIR LADY is a story of identity, transformation and the complexities of class. Adapted by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe from George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion, the musical tells the tale of Eliza Doolittle, a spirited Cockney flower seller whose life is altered by an audacious experiment. The arrogant yet charismatic phoneticist Professor Henry Higgins wagers that he can transform Eliza into a refined lady of society simply by teaching her to speak “properly.” What unfolds is a sharp and humorous exploration of language, status and personal agency, wrapped in a score of extraordinary beauty and sophistication.

The show’s music has become part of the global musical theatre canon. Songs such as Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?, I Could Have Danced All Night and Get Me to the Church on Time continue to resonate, combining lyrical elegance with emotional depth and theatrical flair. When Lerner and Loewe first presented their adaptation in 1956, it was hailed as the perfect musical and went on to win six Tony Awards. It also achieved the distinction of becoming the longest running musical of its time, a testament to its universal appeal.

Central to the original Broadway success was a then 20 year old Julie Andrews, who created the role of Eliza Doolittle and was propelled to international stardom. Her performance earned a New York Drama Critics Award and a Tony Award nomination, establishing her as one of the defining performers of her generation. Andrews’ connection to the work gives particular resonance to the 2016 Australian production on which the Melbourne season is based.

Over a career spanning more than half a century, Andrews has become one of the most celebrated figures in entertainment. Following her stage triumph in My Fair Lady, she made her feature film debut in MARY POPPINS in 1964, winning an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA. She earned a second Oscar nomination and another Golden Globe for her portrayal of Maria von Trapp in THE SOUND OF MUSIC, and later received further acclaim, including a third Academy Award nomination, for her dual role in Victor Victoria. Her enduring association with MY FAIR LADY remains one of the cornerstones of her remarkable legacy.

As Melbourne prepares to welcome this anniversary season, anticipation is building for the casting announcements, which will be revealed in the coming weeks. With its blend of sharp wit, unforgettable characters and a score that ranks among the finest ever written, MY FAIR LADY stands poised to once again captivate audiences, while honouring seven decades of theatrical excellence and opening a new chapter for one of the city’s most cherished stages.
