Gasworks announces Melbourne season of The Riddle of Washpool Gully by Dead Puppets Society

Gasworks Creative Precinct announces the Melbourne season of The Riddle of Washpool Gully. From the company that created Peter and the Starcatcher, Storm Boy and Laser Beak Man, Dead Puppets Society are bringing this enchanting work of contemporary puppetry and storytelling that has captivated audiences across the country.

Playing at Gasworks from 8–11 April 2026, this critically acclaimed production is the perfect school holiday adventure for families.

Far beyond the outskirts of the big city, near a tiny town that nearly everyone forgot, lies a dry creek bed once known as Washpool Gully. The world may have moved on from insignificant places – but something in Washpool Gully is stirring. Shaken by the rumble of engines and the darkening of the sky, something long asleep has decided to wake up.

Combining old-fashioned storytelling with contemporary puppetry and exquisite miniature sets, The Riddle of Washpool Gully is a visually stunning and deeply imaginative theatre experience. This is a story of forgotten places, curious creatures and the fragile magic of the natural world – brought to life with remarkable craftsmanship, heart and theatrical invention.

Following celebrated seasons nationally including at QPAC and Adelaide Festival Centre, the production arrives in Melbourne with an impressive list of accolades, including Tasmanian Theatre Awards for Best Set or Costume Design and Best Sound Design, plus nominations for Best Ensemble and Best New Writing. The Mercury praised the work as “vividly imagined and meticulously realised with beauty, wit and immense heart.”

Adding to the school holiday excitement, Dead Puppets Society will deliver hands-on creative workshops for young people aged 10+. On Thursday 9 April and Friday 10 April. Places are limited.

An AUSLAN-interpreted performance will take place on Saturday 11 April, including a tactile tour prior to the performance.
