Funding for arts available

Arts Minister Virginia Judge is urging arts and cultural organisations to apply for grants under the NSW Government’s 2011 Arts Funding Program.

“A thriving arts and cultural industry promotes innovation at all levels of our society, as well as making a significant contribution to the NSW economy,” said Ms Judge.

“This generous funding program supports arts and cultural organisations and individuals to engage with communities across NSW and celebrate the arts and culture in all its diversity.

“All forms of art and cultural practice will benefit from this funding including music, theatre, dance, literature, museums, history, visual arts and craft.”

Funding is available for annual programs of artistic and cultural activities and for one-off projects.

There are multiple project funding categories including:
• performing arts touring;
• capital development;
• strategic industry development; and
• the creation and presentation of new work.

Ms Judge said the 2011 Arts Funding Program incorporates a new category for small grants to individuals and small-to-medium groups.

“The introduction of a Quick Response fund is one way the NSW Government is reshaping its approach to support for the small-to-medium sector,” she said.

“This fund has a six week turnaround and will be offered four times a year to help individuals and organisations to take advantage of opportunities outside the annual funding program.

“Supporting the growth and development of individual artists is central to a flourishing arts sector.”

Ms Judge said the Arts Funding Program will assist artists to reach out to a wider audience.

“The 2010 Arts Funding Program provided $42 million to a wide range of arts and cultural organisations across NSW, from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra to the Taree Craft Centre,” she said.

“By nurturing a diverse and sustainable arts and cultural sector, the NSW Government is developing a vibrant and creative future for our state.”

The closing date for Program applications and for Performing Arts Touring applications is 31 May 2010. All other applications close on 28 June 2010.
