It has been confirmed that Australian pop sensation and current coach on Channel 9’s The Voice, Delta Goodrem will make her musical theatre debut in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical CATS later this year.

An all-Australian cast brings the acclaimed West End revival production of CATS to Australia from October and Delta has been confirmed to play the coveted role of Grizabella the Glamour Cat in Sydney, Hobart & Melbourne.

“I am so excited to be making my musical theatre debut as Grizabella in CATS, one of the most iconic roles”, Goodrem said this morning.

“Andrew Lloyd Webber’s work is extraordinary and his music speaks to people all around the world. I am so honoured to have the opportunity to share Andrew’s music and Grizabella with a whole new generation of Australian audiences. I grew up admiring Andrew Lloyd Webbers’ musicals, so it is with great honour I am getting to join the CATS’ legacy”.

It is understood that Goodrem will also be releasing new music in the coming weeks.

Many Australian musical theatre veterans have tread the boards as felines in the cast of CATS including Rachael Beck, Sharon Millerchip, Marina Prior, Michael Cormick, John O’Hara, Rohan Browne, Susan-Ann Walker, Silvie Paladino, Francesca Arena, Delia Hannah, Shaun Rennie and many, many more. Goodrem will now join the ranks of the feline family, and perform the showstopper ‘Memory’, one of the most well-known songs of all time, eight times a week.

CATS the musical will be opening at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre on 30 October and touring to Hobart, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide finishing in Perth in April 2016.

This revival introduces a new rapping ‘street cat’ to the junkyard – the famous Rum Tum Tugger – performed by Daniel Assetta, who is set to crack out “some serious breakdancing moves”. Previously announced cast members include Josh Piterman as Gus/Growltiger (did someone say ‘The Prayer’ at Carols By Candelight with Goodrem and Piterman? Perfection!), Matt McFarlane as Munkustrap and Ross Hannaford as Skimbleshanks the Railway cat.

  • I think it's great news that Delta will be playing 'Grizabella'....in the
new Australian tour of Cats . The list of wonderful Australian performers who have got their start in past productions of Cats is impressive to say the least.
May I suggest when mentioning past Australian musical artists who have played the role of 'Grizabella' that you include & honour the great Debra Byrne who originated the role in Australia and of course ...I also had the pleasure of playing Grizabella in the Melbourne production at Her Majesty's Theatre back in 88'....Just saying .
    Cheers Maria Mercedes...?

    • Seconded! Debra made the role in the original opening production of Cats and Maria was sublime in 88!

  • i think it amazing that delta is playing grizabella she has the most amazing vocals looking forward to seeing the musical in january in melbourne :D
