Confirmed: Kinky Boots is coming to Australia!

We were speculating about this just three weeks ago! The six Tony-award winning smash Kinky Boots, by Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper, will make its Australian debut in Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre in October 2016.

Directed and choreographed by two-time Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell, this feel good musical has been running on Broadway since 2013 and is preparing for its West End debut.

Kinky Boots: on its way to Melbourne!

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said “I’m thrilled to announce that the Australian premiere season of Kinky Boots will be hosted in Melbourne, the theatre and arts capital of the country.

It tells a powerful story and speaks to equality, to fairness, to dignity and to all of those things that Victorians hold dear.”

Based on the charming 2005, British film, which is in turn based on a true story, Kinky Boots tells the story of Charlie, who, inspired by Lola, comes up with a clever way to save his family’s shoe factory — by making shoes for drag queens.

Composer and Lyricist Cyndi Lauper said “People’s reactions to Kinky Boots have been amazing from the very beginning.

“By the end of the show, the audiences are on their feet clapping and dancing and cheering – what more could you possibly ask for? And the show has a tonne of heart. It feels like such an honour to be part of something that makes people so happy.”

Lauper won the Tony Award for Best Original Score for Kinky Boots; the first female solo winner to ever take home the award.

Producers Michael Cassel, Cameron Mackintosh, Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig have confirmed that auditions will take place later this year for the production.
