Tim Minchin Teases Potential Jesus Christ Superstar Sequel

This morning, Tim Minchin dropped an intriguing hint on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X: he’s toying with the idea of writing a sequel to the legendary rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. The comedian, musician, and writer, known for his hit musicals Matilda and Groundhog Day, shared his thoughts on future projects and one particular idea that’s been catching his eye.

Minchin confessed that it’s rare for a story or existing work to strike him as needing a musical adaptation, but he’s been mulling over the story of Saul of Tarsus—better known as Paul after his conversion on the road to Damascus. Minchin envisions this as a follow-up to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s iconic Jesus Christ Superstar, in which Minchin famously played Judas during the arena tour over a decade ago, alongside Moyles.

Minchin explained, “Judas is dead, Jesus is dead. It’s just Saul of Tarsus going nuts and spreading the word. He’s a pretty interesting character—there’s definitely something there with Saul of Tarsus, who became Paul on the road to Damascus. I mean, ‘road to Damascus’ in itself sounds like a lyric, doesn’t it?”

While Minchin hasn’t confirmed if this idea will officially become his next musical venture, it’s clear he’s keen on exploring the “aftermath” of the Jesus Christ Superstar story. In the meantime, Minchin is hitting the road for a UK tour, so fans can look forward to catching his live performances while they wait to see what he’ll create next.
