The ‘Wicked’ Movie Buzz Just Got Wickedly Exciting: Live Singing Confirmed

Hold onto your broomsticks, ‘Wicked’ fans! The anticipation for the much-awaited ‘Wicked’ movie adaptation soared today, thanks to an eye-opening feature by Vanity Fair. The piece not only gave us a sneak peek at the cast in their dazzling costumes but also dropped some major behind-the-scenes secrets from the film set to hit cinemas on 27 November 2024.

Leading the cast are Cynthia Erivo, transforming into the emerald-skinned Elphaba, and Ariana Grande, portraying the bubblegum pink and ever-popular Glinda. They’re joined by a stellar lineup including Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, and Ethan Slater. But here’s where it gets juicy: Director Jon M. Chu revealed that Erivo and Grande insisted on singing live during filming, ditching the common practice of lip-syncing to pre-recorded tracks. “When we were shooting it, those girls were like, ‘Forget the pre-records. We’re going live.’” Chu shared with Vanity Fair.

Chu was initially hesitant, questioning the practicality due to potential audio issues from the on-set conditions. However, Erivo and Grande, with their rich history of live performances, didn’t just go for it; they nailed it. Grande’s music career and Erivo’s Broadway and West End credentials clearly set them up for success, as they effortlessly brought their characters’ iconic songs to life.

The decision to go live added a raw, authentic touch to the performances. Erivo’s rendition of “Defying Gravity” was so powerful, she was literally “sailing through the Western sky,” according to Chu. Meanwhile, Grande had her share of action too, with Erivo recalling her co-star’s dynamic performance “jumping on a chandelier over my head whilst singing.”

This approach is a bit of a rarity in musical films, where preserving vocal health often means relying on pre-recorded vocals. Yet, ‘Wicked’ follows in the footsteps of ‘Les Misérables’ and Chu’s own ‘In the Heights’, which also featured live-sung numbers, proving the magic that can happen when actors bring their songs to life in the moment.
