Paddington the Musical sets West End debut, creative team promises fresh story and marmalade-warmth

Paddington is swapping Paddington Station for the Savoy Theatre next month, as PADDINGTON THE MUSICAL begins previews on 1 November at London’s Savoy Theatre. The new stage production pairs Olivier Award winner Jessica Swale, book, with McFly frontman and bestselling children’s author Tom Fletcher, music and lyrics, under the direction of Luke Sheppard, & JULIET, In the Heights, Starlight Express.

Developed over five years, the musical is inspired by the 2014 film, yet the creators stress it is a wholly new theatrical story. The plot again follows the young Peruvian bear’s arrival in London, his welcome by the Brown family, and a brush with villainy. Audiences can expect fresh characters, including Grant, Tarinn Callender, and Lady Sloane, Amy Booth-Steel, plus an expanded role for the Browns’ neighbour Mr Curry, Tom Edden. Henry Brown has been reconceived for the stage. Bonnie Langford joins the company as Mrs Bird.

Fletcher has composed 18 original songs. Only one track, The Explorer and the Bear, an Act Two opener, has been released to date. The score draws on London’s cultural mix, with musical colours tailored to characters such as Hungarian immigrant Mr Gruber. Swale, whose Nell Gwynn won the Olivier for Best New Comedy, and Fletcher, who has created soundtrack albums for his children’s books and seen several adapted for the stage, approach their first full book-and-score musical with what they describe as instinctive, audience-first storytelling.

Producers Sonia Friedman and Eliza Lumley, along with StudioCanal and the Michael Bond estate, granted the trio wide creative latitude. The team says the goal was not to restage the films or books, but to create a one-night-only live experience that honours Paddington’s spirit while adding new theatrical surprises.

One key element remains under wraps. Paddington Bear’s onstage realisation has not been revealed. Credits list a bear designer and a dedicated creative team, and early reactions from those who have seen the effect suggest a crowd-stopping entrance.

Beyond spectacle, the show leans into Paddington’s enduring themes. The creators foreground kindness, belonging, and the experience of the outsider, reflecting the character’s origins as a migrant who finds a home. They aim to explore these ideas without heavy political framing, inviting audiences to make their own connections.

Full casting includes Tarinn Callender, Amy Booth-Steel, Tom Edden, Bonnie Langford, and others to be announced, with additional principal roles for the Browns and Mr Gruber confirmed in company materials. Further details of staging and design are expected as previews begin.

PADDINGTON THE MUSICAL starts previews on 1 November at the Savoy Theatre. Opening night and additional ticket information will be announced in due course.
