Actors’ Equity and Broadway League reach tentative deal, strike averted

Actors’ Equity Association has reached a tentative agreement with the Broadway League on a new Production Contract, heading off a potential strike after an all-night mediation that ran until 6 a.m. ET on Saturday. The three-year pact now goes to Equity’s membership for ratification.

Equity said the agreement preserves the Equity-League Health Fund and delivers progress on other priorities, including scheduling improvements and expanded access to physical therapy. Specific contract terms were not released. Health insurance contributions from the League had been a key sticking point, and Equity had previously authorized a strike and circulated pledge cards while talks stalled.

A federal mediator joined the process this week, helping break weeks of deadlock. The union represents actors and stage managers across Broadway, and a walkout would have shut down productions across the district.

Attention now turns to negotiations between the Broadway League and Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians. The union representing pit musicians has authorized a strike if necessary and said talks are continuing. Local 802 President Robert Suttmann welcomed Equity’s progress, and reiterated that all options remain on the table as its own bargaining continues.

If Equity members ratify the deal, Broadway would avoid a two-union shutdown, and producers could move ahead with fall box office plans under renewed labor stability.
