Suzie Miller’s INTER ALIA leads Australian interest in New York’s autumn 2026 theatre calendar

New York’s 2026 autumn theatre calendar is due to begin on 8 September with the scheduled first Broadway performance of SCHOOL GIRLS; OR, THE AFRICAN MEAN GIRLS PLAY at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. That production starts a season in which eight confirmed Broadway engagements sit inside a wider programme of nonprofit, international and experimental work across Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The scope reflects a New York Magazine critics’ preview published online on 8 September. Its 22 entries span September to December before a TBA revival of SPRING AWAKENING, but they are a subjective selection, not an inventory of every New York production. Nor are they 22 simple standalone shows: KUNST FEST comprises three new works. This preview therefore reorganises the material by market, form and timing rather than reproducing the source list.

Broadway’s three musical entries illustrate the range within the eight engagements. WANTED and GALILEO are new musicals, while Second Stage Theater’s THE FANTASTICKS is a substantially revised version of the long-running work, now centred on a same-sex young couple. Original lyricist and librettist Tom Jones contributed to the revision before his death in 2023. GALILEO will star Raúl Esparza, with a book by Danny Strong, a score by Zoe Sarnak and Michael Weiner, direction by Michael Mayer and choreography by David Neumann.

The Broadway plays range from SCHOOL GIRLS to revivals of OTHER DESERT CITIES and A FEW GOOD MEN, as well as the international transfers MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING and INTER ALIA. SCHOOL GIRLS is written by Jocelyn Bioh and directed by Whitney White, with a company including Denée Benton, Patina Miller and Jasmine Amy Rogers.

Among the season’s prominent Broadway debuts are appearances by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Joe Keery and Rosamund Pike. Louis-Dreyfus and Keery join Ed Harris, Allison Janney and Lily Rabe in OTHER DESERT CITIES, directed by John Benjamin Hickey. The revival also carries a historical Australian connection: Rachel Griffiths originated the role of Brooke in the 2011 Broadway production, although she is not involved in 2026. The strongest present-day Australian connection is INTER ALIA, written by Australian playwright Suzie Miller. Rosamund Pike will reprise her London performance at Broadway’s Music Box Theatre, again directed by Justin Martin. The announced engagement extends into February 2027, while further casting remains to be announced.

Jamie Lloyd’s MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING follows its London run with a limited Broadway engagement starring Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell. The production’s official site confirms an autumn 2026 season lasting ten weeks. Its more precise venue and starting date currently depend on New York Magazine’s reporting rather than the information visible on the official homepage.

International work also enters New York through Brooklyn. Tiago Rodrigues‘s LA DISTANCE comes to BAM for its North American premiere after first being presented at the 2025 Festival d’Avignon. It will be performed in French with English supertitles. The November programme also includes ELEKTRA at Theatre for a New Audience, while SAIGON arrives at St. Ann’s Warehouse in December.

New York’s nonprofit theatres carry much of the work beyond Broadway, mixing new writing with reconsidered texts. September brings DEGENERATES to Playwrights Horizons, GOOD TIME CHARLIE to The Public Theater, ANON: A TEMPEST AT OUR KITCHEN TABLE to MCC Theater and KRAMER/FAUCI to St. Ann’s Warehouse. The critics’ selection also places WAITING FOR LEFTY at Classic Stage Company, while Playwrights Horizons returns to the calendar with HOLE! in December.

Several projects take less conventional routes. New York City Center will present an Encores! production of IN THE HEIGHTS in late October, although no extension or future Broadway transfer has been established. KUNST FEST at The Collapsable Hole combines new works by Lisa Clair, Rachel Kauder Nalebuff and Kate Kremer; its ticketing page also documents childcare support for selected audience members. Target Margin Theater hosts YOU NEVER LEARN, while A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE brings Sam Rockwell, Marin Ireland and Alfred Molina to La MaMa for a limited 13-week engagement.

The practical calendar needs careful reading because the published dates mix preview starts, first performances and complete run windows rather than providing a consistent set of official opening nights. After the 8 September start of SCHOOL GIRLS, KUNST FEST runs from 15 to 20 September. OTHER DESERT CITIES then begins Broadway previews at the Hudson Theatre on 29 September.

New York Magazine’s October schedule lists A FEW GOOD MEN from 8 October, WANTED from 15 October and THE FANTASTICKS from 22 October. IN THE HEIGHTS begins its City Center engagement later that month. The publication reports that MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING will begin at the Winter Garden Theatre on 31 October, updating AussieTheatre’s earlier report that those details were TBA. The date and venue remain attributed because the visible official site confirms only the broader autumn window and ten-week duration.

November brings two Broadway starts on the same day. GALILEO begins previews at the Shubert Theatre on 10 November, while INTER ALIA starts at the Music Box Theatre and runs until 21 February 2027. The month’s non-Broadway programme includes ELEKTRA, LA DISTANCE and YOU NEVER LEARN. A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE begins performances on 27 November, followed by HOLE! at Playwrights Horizons on 1 December and SAIGON at St. Ann’s Warehouse on 3 December.

The remaining calendar question belongs to SPRING AWAKENING. Studio Seaview has announced the revival for autumn 2026 with Danya Taymor directing, but its exact dates, venue and casting remain unresolved. Those details now constitute the next confirmed milestone for the season preview.
