Jennifer Simard to begin SCHMIGADOON! Broadway run on 8 September

Jennifer Simard is scheduled to begin performances as Mildred Layton in SCHMIGADOON! at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre on Tuesday, 8 September 2026. The official production calendar lists a 7.00pm curtain for her first appearance. She succeeds Ana Gasteyer in the winner of the 2026 Tony Award for Best Musical. The performance will bring into effect a replacement casting first reported in August and add a three-time Tony nominee to the Broadway company. This is a scheduled debut-day change, not a fresh casting announcement or a completed first performance.

The handover was disclosed in two stages rather than announced on Simard’s start date. BroadwayWorld reported on 5 August that Gasteyer would leave the role, with replacement casting still to come. The publication then reported Simard’s casting on 25 August and identified 8 September as her first performance. Gasteyer’s scheduled final appearance was Sunday, 6 September, with Simard due to take over two calendar days later. Neither the reporting nor the available official information establishes a reason for Gasteyer’s departure.

Simard’s most recent Broadway role was Helen Sharp in DEATH BECOMES HER. That performance brought her third Tony nomination. Her earlier nominations came for COMPANY and DISASTER!, producing a three-show record of Tony-recognised musical-comedy performances. Mildred Layton is her next Broadway role after Helen Sharp and extends that musical-comedy strand of her stage work.

Playbill’s production chronology records that SCHMIGADOON! began Broadway previews at the Nederlander on 4 April 2026 and officially opened there on 20 April. The stage musical had its world premiere at Washington, DC’s Kennedy Center in 2025 before transferring to New York. That sequence places Simard’s arrival after both the Washington premiere and the establishment of the current Broadway production.

The stage adaptation draws principally on the first season of the Apple Original series. Cinco Paul holds all three principal writing credits for the musical, having written the book, music and lyrics. Christopher Gattelli directs and choreographs. Alex Brightman and Sara Chase lead the Broadway company as Josh Skinner and Melissa Gimble. Together, those credits identify the production’s principal creative leadership and lead pairing as Simard enters the cast.

SCHMIGADOON! won four Tony Awards in 2026. In addition to Best Musical, it received Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations. All four belong to the Broadway production’s 2026 awards season; the 2025 date in its production history refers to the Kennedy Center world premiere.

The production’s official cast page had not yet been refreshed for the handover and continued to list Gasteyer when reviewed. Simard’s start date is carried in BroadwayWorld’s replacement report; separately, the official calendar lists a 7.00pm performance on 8 September. With that curtain yet to occur at the supplied research time, Simard’s first appearance remains scheduled.

For ticket buyers, the Broadway engagement is currently booking beyond the cast change. BroadwayWorld’s report, drawing on producer information, says tickets are on sale through 3 January 2027. The official ticket calendar also displays performances into January, despite an older FAQ line that still refers to a 6 September end date. The January date is the current ticket-sale horizon, not an announced closing date. Available information also sets no end date or schedule exceptions for Simard’s engagement.

The production has one further confirmed step beyond New York. Its official website says a North American tour will launch in September 2027, separately from the current Broadway booking period. No Australian engagement, transfer or tour dates were identified in the official production information reviewed. With no local plans announced, the North American tour launch remains SCHMIGADOON!’s next confirmed expansion beyond Broadway.
