LOS ANGELES - NOV 10: Lin-Manuel Miranda at 2021 AFI Fest - Opening Night Gala "tick, tick BOOM" at the TCL Chinese Theater IMAX on November 10, 2021 in Los Angeles, CA
The Tony Award-winning musical IN THE HEIGHTS will return to New York later this year, with a new staging announced as part of New York City Center’s prestigious gala production series.
The beloved musical, created by composer and lyricist Lin-Manuel Miranda with a book by Quiara Alegría Hudes, will run at New York City Center from 28 October to 8 November 2026. The limited engagement will include a gala opening performance on 28 October, continuing the venue’s tradition of presenting major musical theatre works in special concert or semi-staged formats.
Set in the vibrant neighbourhood of Washington Heights in Upper Manhattan, In the Heights follows a tight-knit community navigating change, ambition and identity while pursuing their own versions of the American Dream. At the centre of the story is Usnavi, the charismatic owner of a small bodega who dreams of returning to the Dominican Republic while supporting the people around him as their lives intersect and evolve.
The new production will be directed by David Mendizábal, whose recent theatre work includes the acclaimed stage production MEXODUS. Further members of the creative team are expected to be announced in the coming months, while casting for the production will be handled by renowned theatrical casting office The Telsey Office.
Originally conceived while Miranda was still a student at Wesleyan University, In the Heights began as a college project before gradually evolving into a full-scale professional production. The musical first received a developmental staging at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s National Music Theater Conference in 2005, a renowned incubator for new musical theatre works.
Following that workshop presentation, the show premiered Off-Broadway in 2007 at the 37 Arts Theater. The production quickly generated significant critical and audience enthusiasm, paving the way for a transfer to Broadway the following year.
When the musical opened on Broadway in 2008 it became an immediate success, earning widespread acclaim for its dynamic blend of hip-hop, salsa, merengue and traditional musical theatre storytelling. The production went on to win four Tony Awards, including the coveted prize for Best Musical, and later became a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2009.
Miranda himself originated the role of Usnavi in the original Broadway production, helping launch his career as one of the most influential figures in contemporary musical theatre. His later work would include the global phenomenon Hamilton, as well as numerous film, television and stage projects.
The story of IN THE HEIGHTS explores themes of migration, identity, generational change and community. Through an ensemble-driven narrative, the musical portrays residents of Washington Heights grappling with economic pressures, shifting neighbourhood dynamics and the complex question of what “home” really means.
Alongside Usnavi, the musical features a range of memorable characters, including college student Nina Rosario, aspiring entrepreneur Benny, fashion-dreaming Vanessa, and the beloved neighbourhood matriarch Abuela Claudia. Their stories intertwine over the course of several hot summer days in the city, building toward moments of celebration, loss and renewal.
Since its Broadway debut, In the Heights has become a staple of contemporary musical theatre repertoire. Productions have been staged internationally, from regional theatre companies to major touring productions, and the musical has remained popular with both audiences and performers for its energetic score and heartfelt storytelling.
The show’s cultural impact expanded further with the release of a major film adaptation directed by Jon M. Chu. The 2021 movie introduced the story to a broader global audience and featured a cast including Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins, Melissa Barrera, Daphne Rubin-Vega and Jimmy Smits.
The upcoming New York City Center production forms part of the venue’s annual gala series, which often presents concert or semi-staged revivals of well-known musicals. These productions frequently feature star casting and creative reinterpretations of classic works, attracting considerable interest from theatre audiences and industry professionals alike.
While details about the scale and staging approach for this production have yet to be confirmed, the gala presentation is expected to spotlight the musical’s iconic score and ensemble storytelling. The City Center series has previously served as a launching pad for several high-profile revivals and transfers.
Tickets for the engagement are already becoming available through a staged booking process. Priority access has opened for City Center patrons, with further access for Encores! subscribers scheduled for May. General public booking will follow shortly afterwards through the venue’s ticketing platform.
For theatre fans, the announcement represents another opportunity to experience one of the defining musicals of the early twenty-first century. Nearly two decades after its Broadway premiere, IN THE HEIGHTS continues to resonate with audiences through its celebration of community, resilience and the power of dreams within an ever-changing city landscape.
