Barack and Michelle Obama Join Producing Team for Broadway Revival of PROOF

Former United States President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are set to make their Broadway producing debut, with the couple joining the production team for an upcoming revival of David Auburn’s Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play PROOF.

The revival will be presented on Broadway later this year under the Obamas’ media company Higher Ground, which will serve as a co-producer on the production. The play is scheduled for a strictly limited 16-week engagement at the Booth Theatre in New York, beginning performances on 31 March ahead of an official opening night on 16 April.

The production will be directed by Tony Award-winning director Thomas Kail, best known for his work on HAMILTON, FREESTYLE LOVE SUPREME and IN THE HEIGHTS. Kail also joins the project as a producer alongside Broadway producer Mike Bosner, with the Obamas’ company Higher Ground now formally attached as co-producers.

The revival will feature a notable cast led by Emmy Award-winning actor Ayo Edebiri, who will take on the central role of Catherine. She will appear alongside Golden Globe winner Don Cheadle, who will portray Catherine’s late father Robert, a brilliant mathematician whose intellectual legacy drives the emotional core of the story. The cast also includes Samira Wiley and Jin Ha.

PROOF remains one of the most celebrated plays of the early twenty-first century. Written by American playwright David Auburn, the drama premiered in 2000 and quickly achieved critical acclaim, earning both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play. The work has since been staged widely around the world and remains a staple of contemporary theatre repertoire.

The story centres on Catherine, a young woman struggling to navigate grief, responsibility and self-doubt in the aftermath of her father’s death. Robert, once a renowned mathematical genius, spent his final years battling severe mental illness, leaving Catherine to care for him while quietly questioning whether she might inherit both his brilliance and his instability.

The discovery of a groundbreaking mathematical proof hidden within Robert’s notebooks sparks a tense debate over authorship, identity and intellectual legacy. As Catherine attempts to prove that the work is her own, she must confront not only scepticism from those around her but also her own fears about whether she shares the same fragile mental state that once plagued her father.

The play explores themes of genius, inheritance and trust, examining the complicated relationship between creativity and mental health. At its core, Proof is a deeply personal story about the weight of expectation and the challenge of defining one’s own identity when living in the shadow of another person’s achievements.

The Obamas’ involvement marks a significant moment for their production company Higher Ground, which has previously focused primarily on film, television and podcasting projects. Since its founding in 2018, the company has developed a reputation for producing storytelling centred on social issues, culture and contemporary history.

Higher Ground has already built an impressive portfolio across other media. The company has received multiple Academy Award nominations and won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature for American Factory. Its productions have also received numerous Emmy Awards and Grammy Awards, demonstrating a broad commitment to creative storytelling across a variety of formats.

The move into Broadway theatre represents a new expansion for the company. In a statement announcing their involvement in the project, Barack and Michelle Obama described PROOF as the type of powerful and thought-provoking story their production company was founded to support.

For the Broadway community, the announcement also reflects the increasingly diverse backgrounds of producers entering the theatre industry. High-profile figures from politics, entertainment and business have frequently joined producing teams in recent years as Broadway continues to attract investors and collaborators from across the cultural landscape.

While the Obamas’ Broadway debut may come as a surprise to some audiences, the couple has long demonstrated a strong interest in the arts. During Barack Obama’s presidency, the White House frequently hosted artists, musicians and theatre makers, highlighting the role of creative expression in public life.

The upcoming revival of PROOF therefore represents both a continuation of that cultural engagement and a new chapter for Higher Ground as it expands into live theatre.

The limited Broadway engagement is expected to attract significant attention, not only because of the Obamas’ involvement but also due to the strength of the creative team and cast assembled for the production. With Thomas Kail directing and a cast led by Ayo Edebiri and Don Cheadle, the revival aims to introduce Auburn’s acclaimed play to a new generation of theatre audiences.

Nearly a quarter of a century after its original premiere, PROOF continues to resonate with audiences through its exploration of family, intellect and the fragile line between brilliance and doubt. The upcoming Broadway revival will offer theatre-goers the opportunity to revisit one of the most compelling contemporary dramas of recent decades, now supported by a producing team that includes two of the most recognisable public figures of the modern era.
