London. UK- 02.04.2024. A night time street view of the Sondheim Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue hosting the musical Les Miserables.
A sudden power outage in the heart of Theatreland forced multiple West End productions to pause or cancel performances last night, leaving thousands of theatregoers stranded on one of the hottest evenings of the year.
Electricity failed across parts of Soho and Covent Garden around 6 p.m, just as audiences were taking their seats. Within minutes, stage lights flickered out, box-office systems crashed and emergency exit signs provided the only illumination inside several historic venues.
Clueless at the Gillian Lynne Theatre managed a 15-minute show stop before power was restored and the cast continued their performance.
Operation Mincemeat at the Fortune Theatre suffered repeated disruptions and ultimately cancelled, offering exchanges or refunds.
Hercules at the nearby Theatre Royal Drury Lane was forced to cancel outright, citing safety concerns for cast and crew.
Long-running favourites Mamma Mia!, The Phantom of the Opera, Cabaret and Tina – The Tina Turner Musical each experienced mid-show pauses; Tina eventually called off its evening performance.
Stranger Things: The First Shadow announced a cancellation hours before curtain up, though producers have not confirmed whether the blackout was the cause.
Social-media videos showed staff guiding patrons back onto the pavement while technicians scrambled to reboot lighting rigs and sound desks. Outside Drury Lane, disappointed ticketholders huddled under the theatre’s portico, using programme fans to combat the 34 °C heat.
Not every marquee went dark. Les Misérables at the Sondheim Theatre continued without interruption, thanks to an in-house generator. Across Oxford Circus, Evita enjoyed an uninterrupted opening-night gala at the London Palladium, drawing cheers, and a few envious tweets, from audiences whose evenings had been cut short.
The incident revived memories of New York’s 2019 Midtown blackout, when casts spilled onto sidewalks for impromptu acoustic sets. In London, health-and-safety rules prevented similar street serenades, but members of the Clueless company grabbed a guitar and treated waiting fans to an unplugged chorus of “Rollin’ With the Homies” while technicians worked to restore power.
UK Power Networks confirmed a “high-voltage fault” affecting parts of W1 and WC2 postcodes, compounded by record electricity demand as air-conditioning units struggled against the sweltering heatwave. Full service was restored shortly after 8 p.m.
Producers have assured customers that all performances will proceed as scheduled tonight. Patrons unable to attend rescheduled shows are advised to contact their point of purchase for refunds.
The blackout provided an unscripted reminder of live theatre’s fragility, and resilience. As one perspiring theatregoer quipped while filing out of the Fortune Theatre: “At least now we know exactly what ‘powerless’ sounds like.”
