Dark Elegance Takes the Stage: New Dorian Gray Musical Aims for 2026 Premiere

Oscar Wilde’s gothic classic The Picture of Dorian Gray is getting a fresh coat of theatrical paint. Songwriter and lyricist Mark J Middlemiss today unveiled the first track from his forthcoming musical adaptation, confirming plans for a 2026 West End debut followed by a UK tour.

The teaser song, “Every Picture Tells a Story,” performed by Barricade Boys front-man Thomas Hewitt, is now streaming on major platforms. A full concept album is slated for release in September, setting the tone for what Middlemiss calls a “sung-through, dark operatic score” inspired by the blockbuster musicals of the late 1970s and ’80s.

“Wilde’s novel practically begs for sweeping orchestrations and big ensemble vocals,” Middlemiss said. “I want audiences to feel as though they’ve stepped into a grand, old-fashioned musical, but one that isn’t afraid to explore the story’s moral shadows.”

From jukebox hits to gothic grandeur

Middlemiss is best known for the long-running touring shows One Night in Dublin and The Big Country Music Show, which criss-crossed the UK and Europe for seven years. The Dorian Gray project marks his first foray into fully original book writing, backed by arrangers Joe Draper, Paul Worthington and Stuart McLean-Fowler. The creative team promises lush orchestrations and a “large ensemble sound” that nods to classics like Les Misérables and Phantom of the Opera.

Plot retains Wilde’s dark allure

Set in Victorian London, Dorian Gray follows a wealthy young aesthete whose portrait ages in his stead, reflecting every moral corruption he commits. Middlemiss says the musical will stay faithful to Wilde’s cautionary tale while heightening its psychological stakes through “recurring leitmotifs and choral commentary.”

What’s next

Casting for principal roles, including the titular Dorian, artist Basil Hallward and cynical Lord Henry Wotton, will begin later this year. Producers aim to workshop the score in London early in 2026 before transferring to a full West End run and subsequent national tour.

For now, theatre fans can whet their appetites with “Every Picture Tells a Story” and wait for September’s concept album, which promises a deeper look into Wilde’s world of beauty, vanity and ruin—set to music that hopes to be as eternal as Dorian’s youth.
