The fifth-anniversary performance of Broadway’s Moulin Rouge! on July 25 faced some unexpected hurdles. A technical glitch delayed the curtain by 45 minutes, requiring key scenes to be adjusted. Additionally, a featured actor injured his foot by intermission, leading to a quick replacement for Act 2. Despite these challenges, the audience’s enthusiasm remained strong, with fans lining up two hours before the show. Overcoming adversity seems fitting for this musical about bohemians fighting to save their theater.
Since its opening on July 25, 2019, Moulin Rouge! quickly became a Broadway favorite. However, the pandemic forced its closure just nine months later, along with the rest of the theater industry. After reopening in September 2021, the musical experienced a significant resurgence. It won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2021 and expanded internationally at an impressive rate. Currently, there are nine productions worldwide, with five (including Broadway and the West End) running concurrently. A Netherlands staging is set to debut in September, and a world tour will launch in Edinburgh in April. To date, Moulin Rouge! has sold 8 million tickets across 5,500 performances.
The Sydney-based production company behind the show, Global Creatures, always planned for a robust international presence, driven by the popularity of Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film and global interest in the title. The pandemic posed significant challenges, but the company navigated supply line disruptions and conducted auditions over Zoom to ensure a swift restart.
During the shutdown, the marketing team kept fans engaged with pro-shot performance clips and behind-the-scenes content. At the packed anniversary performance, dedicated fans received totes and posters, and were treated to a special curtain speech from the original Tony-winning star, who returned to the production that week.
Moulin Rouge!’s journey from its Broadway debut to its global expansion exemplifies resilience and passion, solidifying its place as a beloved and enduring musical.
