Dreamgirls to Return to Broadway in 2026 With Camille A. Brown Leading Revival

Broadway will welcome back one of its most celebrated musicals in the fall of 2026, as Dreamgirls makes its long-awaited return. The Tony Award-winning hit will receive its first-ever Broadway revival, directed and choreographed by five-time Tony nominee Camille A. Brown.

The new production will launch a global talent search to find the three central roles of The Dreams—Deena, Lorell, and Effie. Auditions are scheduled in major cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Miami, London, Toronto, Mexico City, Amsterdam, Rome, and Paris.

First staged at the Imperial Theatre in 1981, Dreamgirls ran for 1,521 performances and became a Broadway landmark under the direction of Michael Bennett. Blending R&B, soul, and theatrical storytelling, the show introduced iconic numbers such as “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” “One Night Only,” and the title track “Dreamgirls.” The original production earned 13 Tony nominations and won six, including awards for Best Book of a Musical, Best Leading Actor, and Best Leading Actress for Jennifer Holliday. Its influence extended worldwide, cemented further by the 2006 film adaptation that earned Jennifer Hudson an Academy Award.

Camille A. Brown has quickly become one of Broadway’s most exciting creative voices. She was nominated for both directing and choreography for the 2022 revival of for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf and has received further Tony nods for her work on Choir Boy, Hell’s Kitchen, and Gypsy. Her choreography credits also include A Streetcar Named Desire and Once On This Island.

The 2026 revival promises to honor the musical’s enduring legacy while introducing a bold new vision under Brown’s direction, ensuring that Dreamgirls continues to captivate audiences for generations to come.
