Cynthia Erivo brought a West End performance of Dracula to a temporary halt after spotting an audience member filming during the show.
The award-winning stage and screen performer is currently starring in Kip Williams’ one-woman adaptation of Bram Stoker’s gothic novel at the Noël Coward Theatre in London. Erivo plays all 23 roles in the production, including Count Dracula, Jonathan Harker, Mina Murray, Lucy Westenra and Van Helsing.
The incident occurred during a Monday performance, when Erivo reportedly stopped the show after noticing someone in the audience recording on a mobile phone. The performance was paused briefly while the matter was addressed, with audience members told to remain seated before the show resumed.
The interruption reportedly lasted around 10 minutes, and the individual involved was removed from the auditorium before the production continued. Audience accounts shared online described the moment as unexpected, with several theatregoers noting that the show came to a standstill after Erivo called attention to the filming.
The incident has renewed discussion around audience behaviour in theatres, particularly the use of phones during live performances. Filming is prohibited in most professional theatre settings, both because of copyright restrictions and because it can distract performers and other audience members. The issue has become more visible in recent years as mobile phone use, curtain call filming and unauthorised clips from productions circulate widely online.
Erivo’s Dracula is an especially technically demanding production. Williams’ staging uses live camera work and screen elements, with Erivo performing alone across a large number of characters in a two-hour production without an interval.
The performance came shortly after Erivo completed the 2026 TCS London Marathon, adding to public interest in the physical demands of the role. Her work in Dracula has drawn strong notices, with the production’s official site citing praise for her solo performance and transformation across the play’s many characters.
The production is scheduled to continue at the Noël Coward Theatre through the end of May, with Erivo leading the limited West End run.
