Broadway’s brightest stars rose to their feet as Cynthia Erivo opened the 78th Annual Tony Awards at New York City’s iconic Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 8. The acclaimed performer captivated audiences with a dazzling original song, setting the tone for an unforgettable evening honoring the best in theatre.
Dressed elegantly in a glittering red gown, Erivo began her performance backstage, strolling confidently toward the stage in a cinematic sequence that featured a cameo by Oprah Winfrey, who offered the inspiring advice: “Be yourself.” From there, Erivo launched into a vibrant original number, featuring uplifting lyrics such as, “It’s our stories and our songs that let us soar,” accompanied by a spirited choir.
The performance was a heartfelt tribute to the evening’s standout nominees, including Audra McDonald (Gypsy), George Clooney (Good Night, and Good Luck), Sarah Snook (The Picture of Dorian Gray), and Cole Escola (Oh, Mary!). Adding further excitement, Erivo ventured into the audience to share the spotlight, interacting playfully with theatre luminaries like Kristin Chenoweth, Aaron Tveit, and Adam Lambert.
Hosting the Tonys for the first time, Erivo, 38, brought both her powerful vocals and a dynamic stage presence to the role. A Tony winner herself, awarded in 2016 for her acclaimed debut performance in The Color Purple, Erivo effortlessly stepped into a tradition carried previously by notable hosts such as Neil Patrick Harris, Hugh Jackman, Rosie O’Donnell, and Ariana DeBose.
Reflecting on her hosting duties earlier, Erivo expressed enthusiasm, stating, “I am looking forward to ushering the theater community at large through a night that celebrates the wonderful performances we have witnessed throughout the year. I hope I can rise to the occasion.”
The celebrated actress and singer, who earned an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Harriet Tubman in Harriet, will next be seen reprising her role as Elphaba in the highly anticipated sequel Wicked: For Good, releasing November 21, alongside Ariana Grande. Audiences will also catch her this summer as the title character in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl.
With her vibrant and joyous opening act, Erivo firmly established herself as a charismatic and unforgettable host, setting the perfect stage for celebrating a remarkable year on Broadway.
