Bobby Rush Bio-Musical in development for Broadway 2023

Slippin’ Through the Cracks, a new musical chronicling the life of blues icon Bobby Rush is set to have an industry reading in New York this coming March. The musical was workshopped in Jackson, Mississippi, the heart of blues music culture, and has been in development for some time.

Bobby Rush, a two-time Grammy Award winner, 14-time Blues Music Award winner, and Blues Hall of Famer, grew up as a sharecropper and went on to spread blues music around the world. At the age of 89, he has been in the music industry for close to 70 years and is now responsible for the music and lyrics for this new musical. Rush collaborated on the book with Stephen Lloyd Helper, who is best known for conceiving the hit musical Smokey Joe’s Cafe.

Co-directed by Helper and Arminda Thomas, Slippin’ Through the Cracks features musical direction by Felton Offard, with arrangements by Offard and MorganE. The reading in March is an exciting opportunity to showcase the work of this talented team and to generate interest in the project.

As Bobby Rush’s story is brought to life on stage, fans of the blues and lovers of musical theater will undoubtedly be eager to experience this new production.
