Alan Cumming Appointed Artistic Director of Scotland’s Pitlochry Festival Theatre

Tony Award-winning actor Alan Cumming has been named the new artistic director of Pitlochry Festival Theatre in Scotland, with his tenure set to begin in January 2025. Cumming’s first programmed season in this role is scheduled to premiere in 2026, marking a significant step in the theatre’s ongoing development.

Cumming, renowned for his Tony-winning role as The Emcee in Broadway’s ‘Cabaret,’ brings extensive experience as both an actor and director, including past roles such as co-directing the film ‘The Anniversary Party’ and Off-Broadway’s ‘Tennessee Rising.’ His appointment as artistic director at Pitlochry Festival Theatre reflects his deep-rooted connection to Scotland and a commitment to elevating the theatre’s profile by attracting top-tier talent from around the world and highlighting Scotland’s theatrical heritage.

The theatre’s current artistic director, Elizabeth Newman, will conclude her leadership with a production of ‘The Sound of Music’ later this year. Newman has planned an ambitious 2025 season featuring adaptations of ‘The Great Gatsby,’ ‘Grease,’ ‘The 39 Steps,’ and four new plays. She has expressed her confidence in Cumming’s ability to lead the theatre into a dynamic new phase, emphasizing his potential to foster innovative artistic collaborations and engage diverse audiences.

Cumming’s vision for Pitlochry Festival Theatre includes enhancing its role as a community hub and a showcase for world-class theatre. He intends to utilize the theatre’s exceptional facilities and creative potential to make it a destination for both local and international audiences. His approach aims to build on the theatre’s legacy while exploring new artistic directions, aligning with the broader cultural significance of the venue in Scotland.

With Cumming at the helm, Pitlochry Festival Theatre is poised to embark on an exciting new chapter, characterized by a blend of innovative programming and a strong commitment to community engagement. The appointment is expected to reinforce the theatre’s standing as a leading cultural institution, both within the UK and on the global stage.
