A Quick Chat With Bjorn Stewart

This week AussieTheatre.com catches up with Bjorn Stewart.

Bjorn trained at the University of Wollongong, and has performed professionally in a number of productions as well as creative developments and short play festivals. He has appeared in Ben Hur: The Stadium Spectacular and The Colour Blind Project and co-developed Bully Beef Stew.

Bjorn is a member of the Moogalin Theatre Company and was a former member of the Kinetic Energy Theatre Company, which focuses on political injustices.

He is also a playwright and has directed productions around the Sydney and Wollongong regions.

He is currently appearing in Belvoir’s The Dark Room, which has just been extended until December 11 due to popular demand.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A cartoonist

Who is the most important person in the world to you?
It’s got to be Mum!

What animal best represents you and why?
I think a kangaroo, because I kind of hop from one place to the next, chill out a lot and taste delicious.

If you were a contestant on Deal or No Deal, how much would you need to be on offer before you walked away?
It has to be enough to get the bus home and something to brag about to the mates.

What’s the worst date you’ve ever had?
Getting a date is good enough for me, I haven’t really had a bad date so far. I have had awkward ones though.

Windows or MAC?
Own a Windows, want a Mac.

Which Spice Girl was your favourite?
Scary Spice, she had character.

Who is the actor you would be most like to work alongside?
Samuel L. Jackson

What is the best thing about theatre in Australia?
The multicultural range we have access to and portraying that on stage.

What is the worst thing about theatre in Australia?
That there are some companies out there sadly ready to exploit young artists. I’ve had my fair share of almost falling into these traps, but you learn from these experiences.

Favourite food?
Cheesecake!

What was the first piece of theatre/film/TV you ever appeared in and how old were you?
It was a church play about David and Goliath, I was playing David, I think I was 5 years old.

What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
Kitchen hand and bar staff at a restaurant in the middle of nowhere. I always got lost getting there and coming back home.

On a beach in Darwin with my family watching the sunset.

Red! It’s made for actors and for putting hair on your chest.

Where is the most interesting place you have travelled?
North Queensland it’s really beautiful.

Where do you see yourself in five years? 
I will still be working on stage, television and film. This is my meaning to life.
