The ’70s and ’80s may not be the pinnacle of pop music, but much of its legacy still has some real appeal. Some who were there then may not remember much of it, but there were plenty of ’70s and ’80s aficionados who do, and who crammed into the very fitting venue of the Festival Theatre stage, and bopped to their hearts’ content!
Tim Campbell is a most appealing, unpretentious performer. He has the fine knack of playing his audience to the hilt, with his infectious energy and charm. He was backed by his band of contemporaries, and supported with the fine voice of Susie Ahern. Together, they brought to life some of the great hits of the era. Much of the repertoire for the 70 minute cabaret performance came from Campbell’s album High School Disco, appropriately opening with a fine rendition of Step back in Time, with Campbell capping it with a classic Travolta pose.

We were treated to a live replay of The Singing Bee , with some bold and very creditable volunteers from the audience, along with songs such as Queen’s Crazy Little Thing Called Love, and I’m Every Woman from Suzy Ahern. All this against lots of great drive and rhythm from the band, as well as Campbell’s agile physical and vocal sprightliness, creating a great atmosphere and palpable enjoyment.
The whole was rounded off with an energetic performance by Tim Campbell of It’s What I Like About You, by The Romantics, sung directly to the audience, who would have found it hard not to like him back. This trip down memory lane promised “a night of absolute fun”, and it certainly delivered.
