This Is Capital City: An exciting adventure

This is Capital City – La Boite

This Is Capital City is a promenade performance that takes place in the Kelvin Grove Village and surrounds as part of the La Boite Indie Season.

But more than that, it is an exciting adventure where fantasy and reality combine as individuals manned with headphones navigate the Urban Village as a character in new world order.

It’s the most fascinating piece of interactive roving theatre I have seen to date and is the production to see this year. Big call I know, but I guarantee you will never have experienced anything like it and your theatrical palette will be richer for it.

Armed with a smart phone and headphones, individual audience members will go on a solo journey around the Kelvin Grove village, exploring the world of the “Capital City” with new eyes and ears, as you listen to instructions and move accordingly. But this is no casual walk in the park, and you aren’t quite alone. You become involved in the story and each person is shadowed by an ‘invigilator’ to help guide you if needed.

A truly unique interactive experience, you become involved in the story and meet characters and pick up clues along the way as you choose your own adventure, and push the boundaries of theatre into new forms.

But don’t let the interactivity scare you off by thinking this is anything like the angst-ridden audience participation of traditional theatre. I felt completely safe and in my comfort zone throughout this exciting adventure and had the safety blanket of my guide as silent reassurance.

Although there are still some technical glitches to iron out, on the whole, it is a really well thought through piece of work and the programming behind the smartphone app is like a magicians trick. How do they get the GPS co-ordinates to trigger sound files?

Such a clever concept by the wonderful mind of Sandra Carluccio and so much fun to experience the immersive environment provided. I would thoroughly recommend This is Capital City and can’t wait to see what they do next.

This has been such a popular ticketed item, that the show is completely sold out.

However, you do have a chance of seeing this wonderful production in 2014 by voting for it as your favourite Indie production. Thanks to the support of the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, one of the six La Boite Indie producers will get to stage their production at QPAC in 2014.
