Mystique with Michael Boyd: Sea World Resort – Ocean Theatre

Michael Boyd – Mystique

Magicians have a hard time these days with a room full of skeptics trying to work out how the magic tricks are done rather than being a believer and just going along for the magic carpet ride.

Adding to that, are the humbugs of the magic world who traded in their secrets for their soul and betrayed the magicians code for a buck. Either way, modern magicians need to step up their game to keep thrilling a clued-in, google-searching audience.

From casinos to cruise ships and five star hotels, Australia’s Got Talent Finalist Michael Boyd, manages to keep a bit of the magic alive, presenting new tricks and old classics with a twist in his new show Mystique, currently playing in the Ocean Room at Seaworld Resort. At the beginning of the show Michael calls for a young volunteer from the audience.  The volunteer instantly becomes a magician by mixing  bit of theatre sports, costuming, and physical ventriloquism;  a clever and entertaining of creating a warm-up act.

The presentation of the entire show was world-class with professional lighting and a well-selected soundtrack, which helped create a mysterious and suspenseful atmosphere. Joining Michael Boyd onstage were four young (hot) dancer/assistants, wearing eye-catching costumes suggestive of Vegas style showgirls. The addition of the dancers added a touch of vaudeville which added variety to the magic.

Special stage guests added a comic element to the show and the story about how Michael became interested in magic added yet another dimension, the personal.  It turns out that his grandfather was a magician and the audience was shown the first trick the young Michael learned. His enthusiasm for magic was such that he joined the Young Magicians Magic School in Melbourne at age thirteen and he hasn’t stopped since. If Michael had gone to Hogwarts the Harry Potter story may have had a different ending…

With more than a few ‘How did he do that?’ moments, Mystique is a magic show with variety, class, humour, and high-gloss production values that the whole family will enjoy.

Running for about 90 minutes, including an interval, Mystique will play in Sea World Resort’s Ocean Theatre Tuesday to Sunday from 2-31 January 2014 at 7.30pm, with special matinee shows on Saturday and Sunday. Please note that Family of 4 passes are not available online and must be booked by calling 13 33 86.
