Kane Alexander – All I Know

Kane Alexander comes out swinging with the Gershwin standard, ‘I Got Rhythm’ – followed by some banter about his childhood and then a lovely dedication to his ninety three year old grandmother (who was in the audience).

He tells us that his first professional gig was at The Adelaide Festival Centre many years ago. How fitting that his show, All I Know featuring highlights of his performances over the last ten years is played out where it all began.

Alexander is well known for his touring and many roles on the musical stage, and as the show
gradually warms up it’s not hard to see why.

‘More Than This’ a Stephen Schwartz song delivered with smooth sincerity, one of Kane’s
favourite’s, ‘Flight’ by Craig Carnelia and “All I Know” an Art Garfunkel piece and as his show title all display the talent and beautiful voice of this highly professional performer.

He’s so “cabaret”, and fits the glove of the Festival perfectly.

‘Please Don’t Ask’, a Graeham Goble song and big hit for John Farnham is a total winner with this audience. Alexander has a gift for hitting and holding the high notes and this is a gift for us.

Jerry Herman’s, ‘The Secret of My Success’ originally written for Hello Dolly (and cut for Broadway) is snappy, up-beat and fun and the Roy Orbison song ‘Crying’ is nothing short of vocally stunning.

A tribute to New York City leads into an Alan J Lerner & Charles Strouse song – ‘There’s Always One That You Can’t Forget’ and keeps with the theme of love which runs throughout the show.

Some more casual chat about New York, Alexanders’ time there and his obvious love of the place flows into an almost jazz song and a change of pace. I could have done with a touch more of the fast step toe tapping numbers – but hey, I’m not complaining, the arrangement worked well.

Kane winds it up with the Seal hit, ‘Kiss From A Rose’ which confirms that this boy has everything in “the voice” department down-pat; and then like the true performer that he is, he gives us a little bit more for his encore and exits smartly to a loud and enthusiastic applause. Great show!
