Circa: Wunderkamer

Circa take circus to a whole new level as they open a curiosity cabinet of physical mastery that is irreverent, sexy, turbulent, breathtaking and at times laugh out loud funny.

Wunderkammer, Circa

There is always a sense of awe at this level of tumbling and turning from the less agile, but Circa certainly captivate the crowd on this beautifully choreographed journey, created by
Artistic Director Yaron Lifschitz and the Circa ensemble.

Their Wunderkamer is a series of vignettes of hard bodies, bulging muscles, whimsy and intrigue. From the sexy slow reverse strip on the ground, only to be reversed again high in the air on a trapeze later in the show, to a couple who tread all over each other as they rise and fall, squash and inflate.

The ensemble is arresting, as they hurtle and roll across the stage, climb high and stand on each other’s heads balancing with masterful strength and just a note of the precarious. Each story seems to end with bodies being stretched in unlikely ways and often dragged like sacks across the stage as they herald a new curiosity.

There are so many strong performances  but not to be missed are the campy solo to Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights, or the sensual trapeze act to Peter Gabriel’s Book of Love.

A wonderful night at the cabinet of curiosity:  strange beasts, rubbery humans, strapping torsos and chunky legs, all to a sublime sound track. Pure delight!
