Adelaide Cabaret Festival – Toby Francis: Blokelahoma!

Toby Francis came out to his parents twice… but not for what you think! Lets face it, when you’re in your early twenties, don’t mind a bit of singing and cabaret, move from Canberra to Sydney and have an obsession with Aussie rock, the road is bound to be a little bumpy.

Under the direction of David Campbell, this winner of the 8th Annual Cabaret Showcase in Sydney weaved a laconic, blokey story between a range of numbers which showcased his powerful rock tenor voice. There’s a certain endearing quality to Francis’ banter and his stand-up observations on everything from gay marriage to racism struck a chord with the chortling crowd despite the “rough-around-the-edges” feel to this first-time cabaret show.

What was great about this show was Francis’ amazing voice and unique song selections exquisitely accompanied by pianist and musical director, Andrew Worboys. The full-length marathon of ‘Bat Out of Hell’ and the heart-felt ‘Not a Child’ were highlights among many others.

A great young artist who we’ll hopefully see more of again.
