Wicked nears special milestone

Lucy Durack and Amanda Harrison in Wicked

On Monday, April 19, over 60,000 new tickets for the musical Wicked go on sale, with single ticket bookings being taken up until June 6th. In the next few weeks, Wicked will celebrate the extraordinary achievement of the one millionth visitor to the production.

Opening at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre in July 2008, the musical played for 13 record-breaking months before starting previews at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre on September 5, 2009. The show has broken all previous weekly box office records for a musical at the Capitol Theatre, and in the next few weeks Wickedwill achieve the milestone of having been seen by more than 1,000,000 people in Australia.

Australian Co-Producer of Wicked John Frost is thrilled that the production has reached this landmark.

“This is an amazing feat, reached by only a handful of other musicals in Australian theatre history. Australian audiences have fallen under the magical spell of Wicked,” Frost said.

“Melbourne and Sydney audiences have taken the show to their hearts, with some people coming to the theatre for the first time in their lives and others seeing the show multiple times. I’d like to thank audiences for helping us reach the milestone of one million people, and we’re looking forward to staying around in Sydney for as long as audiences want to see this magical show.”

To celebrate this achievement, Wicked‘s radio partner 2GB will hold an outside broadcast of the Alan Jones Breakfast Show from the stage of the Capitol Theatre on Tuesday, May 4. If the milestone has been reached, Alan Jones will phone Wicked’s one millionth ticketholder, and they will win a Wicked VIP upgrade, including overnight accommodation for two at Vibe Hotel Sydney, a pre-show dinner for two at any of the Wicked official partner restaurants supplied by Showbiz, chauffeured transport to dinner and the show, a signed programme, two “Ozmopolitan” cocktails, a Wicked merchandise bag, a backstage tour and a photo with Wicked cast members.

Wicked, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman is produced by Marc Platt, Universal Pictures, The Araca Group, Jon B Platt, David Stone and John Frost.
