Part of a worldwide event, other countries also taking part of the new series include the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Germany and Brazil.
Merrily We Roll Along is the first of the West End productions to be distributed to Cinemas worldwide as part of a new deal with London’s Digital Theatre – a deal to distribute a series of acclaimed productions captured live in High Definition, in London’s West to cinemas across the globe.
This marks the first time that productions from the West End’s leading commercial theatre producers are available in High Definition as a global cinema series.
Merrily We Roll Along is the story of three dear friends and their turbulent relationship over three decades. Starting in 1980 and travelling backwards in time, this powerful and moving story features some of Sondheim’s most beautiful songs including ‘Good Thing Going’, ‘Not a Day Goes by’ and ‘Old Friends’. Triple Oliver Award-winner Maria Friedman makes a thrilling directorial debut with this vibrant, full scale production with an exceptional cast.
Stephen Sondheim was recently awarded one of the top honours in the arts world: the Edward MacDowell Medal for lifetime achievement. He has won an Academy Award, 8 Tony Awards, 8 Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Award, a Lawrence Oliver Award and the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.
Stephen Sondheim said: “This production of Merrily We Roll Along is not only the best I’ve seen, but one of those rare instances where casting, direction and show come together in perfect combination, resulting in the classic ideal of the sum being greater than the parts”.
