Up Close: Somos

Sydney Dance Company presents Up Close: Somos – a world premiere season with a distinct Spanish flavour, held in the Neilson Studio at the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct.

Sydney Dance Company’s inaugural Up Close series presents Somos – a world premiere by Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela. Somos, meaning “we are” in Spanish, features a cascade of powerful and intimate solos, duos and trios that speak to Rafael’s Spanish roots, with music by iconic Latin musicians such as Rosalía, Silvia Pérez Cruz, Buika, Arca, Chavela Vargas, Estrella Morente.

With set and costume design by Kelsey Lee and lighting design by Damien Cooper, Up Close: Somos will be held in the round, providing audiences with an unparalleled connection to Sydney Dance Company’s masterful ensemble, as their formidable artistry and breathtaking physicality is experienced closer than ever before.

In keeping with the Spanish feel, Sydney Dance Company’s cafe space will be transformed into Bar Boca, a lively tapas bar for pre and post show meals and drinks, complete with live music on Friday and Saturday nights.

Sydney Dance Company’s Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela:

Somos is possibly my most intensely personal work yet. This is the very first time in my career that I have returned to my Spanish roots, digging deep and exploring how my home country has helped to shape me as an artist and as a person, honouring my family and the traditions of my place of birth.
