Aussie Musical theatre star Tyran Parke is bringing a very special concert to Adelaide’s Arts Gallery of South Australia next week, and you’d be crazy to miss it.
The show, Compositions: A Musical Close Up, debuted in Adelaide at the Cabaret Festival in 2013 to great acclaim and is now returning to the Festival State for one night only on Wednesday 29 April at 7pm.
The premise of the show is brilliant: Trent Parke (Tyran’s brother) is an award winning photographer. Tyran contacted some of the world’s most renowned composers and asked them to write new songs inspired by images that his brother took. Songs for Tyran to sing.
Cool idea, right?
Even cooler is the list of composers who have contributed to the project: Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Wicked), John Bucchino (It’s Only Life, A Catered Affair), Jeff Marx (Avenue Q), Craig Carnelia (What You’d Call a Dream), David Shire (Baby, Closer than Ever), Amanda McBroom (The Rose), Scott Alan (Dreaming Wide Awake, Keys), Jeff Blumenkratz (Urban Cowboy), Eddie Perfect (Shane Warne the Musical) and Matthew Robinson (Metro Street).
Between them, these writers have amassed; twelve Oscars, four Tony awards, seven Grammys and one Golden Globe amongst many other awards. And here, in Compositions, audiences are allowed a brief glimpse into how these people see the world.
What’s more, as Tyran is a celebrated Musical Theatre performer and is Internationally recognised as one of Australia’s brightest prospects, so too is his brother Trent so celebrated in the photography world, being the only Australian member to gain entrance to the exclusive ‘Magnum’ – an international photographic collective.
Concurrently, the Art Gallery of South Australia is holding an exhibition of Trent Parke’s photography entitled The Black Rose, which is a very clever double bill.
