Two Sisters, starring Jean Kittson, at Emanuel Synagogue: tickets on sale!

Acclaimed Producer Adam Liberman and Emanuel Synagogue are excited to present Two Sisters, starring renowned actress and comedian, Jean Kittson. The four performances of the dramatised reading will take place at Emanuel Synagogue in Woollahra between 19 and 23 May 2021.
Writing for Broadway World, reviewer Shari Barrett said of the play’s 2016 US debut that Gail Louw had written “…an exquisite play”.

Emanuel Synagogue was founded in 1938 and is regarded as one of Australia’s most inclusive and dynamic congregations. It is known for its commitment to social justice works (especially concerning refugees and the homeless), other matters of human rights as well as animal rights, and environmental action.

Jean Kittson is one of Australia’s leading comedians and entertainers, with acting credits including Mum’s the Word, Calendar Girls and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She is a regular guest on the ABC radio show Thank God It’s Friday and the author of several books, including You’re Still Hot to Me: The Joys of Menopause.

Producer Adam Liberman counts among his credits Freud’s Last Session with Henri Szeps (Theatre Royal), Blonde Poison with Belinda Giblin (Sydney Opera House), The Time Machine with Mark Lee (NIDA Playhouse), and Lip Service with Amanda Muggleton (MTC’s Lawler Theatre).

Director Nicholas Papademetriou is an actor and director who has worked for major theatre companies including STC, MTC, Belvoir, Ensemble and Sport for Jove.

“Two Sisters will definitely resonate with anyone who’s ever been part of a family,” she wrote.

Audiences will meet playwright Gail Louw’s Two Sisters, Rika and Edith, who are very close but about to discover a shocking truth about their past. Can they adapt or will they now, after seventy years, become strangers?

Set on a kibbutz in Israel in 1996, it reveals the politics, rivalry, sweetness, humour and sadness inextricably entwining the sisters’ lives. It explores sibling relationships and their often wildly differing perceptions of past events.

It confronts the realities of growing old; maintaining or relinquishing independence, the need for others, and complex emotions including selfishness, guilt and regret.
