Twenty years on, Relative Merits returns to the stage

Twenty years ago, Relative Merits introduced us to David Campbell in his very first professional role. Written by Barry Lowe, this show played Melbourne and Sydney in 1993, 1994 and 1996. Now, two decades later, this highly-charged show is finding its way back to Sydney.

Set in 1989, this is the story of a gay footballer, his coming out, and his confused, homophobic younger brother. The play is laced with violence, emotion and humour in equal depths.

Jeff Teale (South Pacific), a former professional football player, will play Adam, the football hero, and in the Relative Merits fashion of showcasing exciting new talent, James Wright will play the younger brother Clay. This is his second professional role.

The show will play late nights (10pm) at the King St Theatre in Newtown, and early Sunday evenings. How much changed since 1989, or 1993, the year of the play’s debut? We’re about to find out.

Relative Merits begins performances on 4th July for a limited season.
