Beware the trolls at ATYP!

From June 26 – 29, atyp presents… are playing host to a bunch of trolls in the form of FONY 2013, an exciting new play from Victoria’s Courthouse ARTS.

Written by top Australian playwright Ross Mueller and actor/theatremaker Georgina Capper, FONY tells us the story of Jennifer Lee, who becomes an overnight smash in the Cyber Buddy Program. For some people, this wasn’t enough. For four students who thought they knew her, an afternoon locked in a classroom would become  the point at which their lives would change.

A story about how to be authentic in an anonymous world where you can be anyone you want to be, FONY touches on social media, digital activism, bullying, trolling, duck shooting, and rumour-made-easy. It will make you laugh and make you at least think about crying.

Fraser Corfield, atyp’s Artistic Director, said that FONY is inspired by an incident where a young person became famous overnight. “The impact was fascinating. Within days, everyone was their best friend. Everyone knew them better than everyone else. Everyone had the inside story.

“This is a production that will speak directly to young Australians here and now about the complex relationships between Facebook ‘friends’.”

Georgina Capper highlights that FONY is an ideal piece for Drama students to see. “As well as being a challenging and relevant piece thematically for young people, the show makes great use of non-naturalism. The actors are young – some have only just left school themselves, so it will be extremely exciting and irreverent viewing for students from year nine upwards.”
