Threepenny Opera plays at the STC

Offpring‘s Eddie Perfect (pictured with Paul Capsis) will star as the original city criminal who’s never met a law, a woman or a cop he couldn’t break at the STC.

This September, Mack The Knife will be joined on stage by Jenny, Filch, Tiger Brown, Polly and the Peachums at the Sydney Theatre, Walsh Bay in a new adaptation of The Threepenny Opera.

The Threepenny Opera is Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s musical masterpiece which critiques the greed, evil, corruption and lust considered to be at the heart of bourgeois society.

This 20th century milestone of musical theatre incorporates the danger and hedonism of 1920s Berlin cabaret to create a raw, jazzy and intensely beautiful score. 

STC presents this Malthouse Melbourne and Victorian Opera co-production, directed by Michael Kantor and conducted by Richard Gill from 1 – 24 September (opening 3 September) as part of Berlin Sydney: A program of theatre, music, cabaret and exhibition inspired by 20s and 30s Berlin. The program is being held at leading arts venues across Sydney. 

In her review of the Melbourne season, AussieTheatre.com’s Anne-Marie Peard said:

“…Brecht would have had a proud giggle at the bawdy Aussie interpretation of the text and lyrics by Raymond Cortese and Jeremy Sands. Once you discover Brecht and Weill, there’s no going back to a theatre world without them and great professional productions of The Threepenny Opera should not be missed.”
