These Youths Be Protesting

This April, Blinking Light brings their highly anticipated production of These Youths Be Protesting written and directed by Blinking Light’s founder Izabella Louk, to KXT on Broadway, for a strictly limited season!

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off meets Don’t Look Up in this comedy about climate change. Led by future school captain Lemon, the students of Sunlake Downs High School’s Recycling club hold a cake stall so they can save up for one of those cool machines that turns cans and bottles into money.

Visited by local politician Greg Moresby who presents them with a giant novelty cheque (#vintage) and posts about their cake stall on instagram, the club soon discover they’ve been used as a political greenwashing tactic to distract from Moresby approving a new coal mine on the site of their favourite hang-out spot; The Dunes. The club bunk-off school and race to Sydney to clear their names but are dragged into a whirlwind of social media chaos, political mud-slinging, and other people’s opinions.

A finalist for the 2024 Martin Lysicrates Prize, These Youths Be Protesting is an exciting, evocative and comedic coming-of-age story about finding your voice and knowing when to stand up for what is right. If you are interested in new Australian theatre, Australian politics, frog-in-a-ponds, climate change, and the crippling ennui of being a teenager, this show is certainly one for you.

Brought to you by a powerhouse team of emerging creatives including company founder, director and playwright extraordinaire Izabella Louk (The 39 Steps, Blinking Light) and co-producers Claudia Elbourne (Senseless and Fitz, Old Fitz Theatre) and Laura Campbell (Ghost Quartet, Antipodes Theatre Company ), rounded out by set designer Paris Bell (Rhomboid, Liminal Productions), lighting designer and production manager Caitlain Cowan (The Female of the Species, Rogue Projects), stage manager Radhika Lal (The 39 Steps, Blink, composer and sound designer Marc Simonini (Dj Stinky), assistant stage manager Isabel Zakharova (The 39 Steps, Blinking Light), alongside a thrilling cast composed of Courtney Henri (Tidal, Two Black Cats), Hamish Alexander (Bump, STAN), Karrine Kanaan (Tender Napalm, QUT), and Rachel Thomas (Girl Band, New Ghosts Theatre Company), this exemplar company is one to watch!
