Despite the many rumours and theories currently circulating about the ‘closure’ of Sydney’s Theatre Royal, AussieTheatre.com can confirm that Sydney’s 1133 seat theatre is not closing its doors.

Despite the many rumours and theories currently circulating about the ‘closure’ of Sydney’s Theatre Royal, AussieTheatre.com can confirm that Sydney’s 1133 seat theatre is currently programming theatre for next two years. 

Shortly after the postponing of Rock Of Ages Sydney season (scheduled to play at the Theatre Royal from January 14 2012), the Sydney Morning Herald suggested that the theatre’s future might be in jeopardy.

“There have been persistent rumours that the theatre might close temporarily or permanently because of a need to renovate the 33-year-old MLC Centre in which it is housed”, they wrote. 

It seems that sensationalism has been rife of late within the theatre industry, and despite the minor set back in programming, theatre lovers and industry members alike can rest assured we are not losing a performance space in our harbour city. 

“The building is being sold”, a source told AussieTheatre.com recently “and they were told to hold off taking bookings into the theatre until the building was sold”, but it seems that it’s business as usual once more. 
AussieTheatre.com understands that the Theatre Royal is currently poised to possibly host at least two big musicals next year – one new musical and one revival. Jersey Boys (pictured) is currently playing at the Theatre Royal until December 18 2011.   What would YOU like to see at the Theatre Royal in 2012?  (NB: Scooby Doo LIVE!
