THE WAY WE GET BY – Melbourne Fringe Festival
A guy, a girl and a fly on the wall audience. In an hour and a half, we spend a lifetime with Doug and Beth. An awkward 4am conversation turns into an intimate exploration of identity and the concept of love. Played out in real time, Beth and Doug upheave their whole lives, leaving nothing unsaid.
The Way We Get By is a truthful romantic comedy, revealing the depth of the connection between these two people as they have no choice but to say everything, they have been too scared to say. Negotiating with themselves, each other, and the world how best to proceed with their relationship, rediscovering what is important in life.
This is about people. 2 people who have found themselves on the precipice of changing their lives for better or worse. Doug and Beth have known each other since they were in high school. Their respective feelings for each other remaining a mystery until tonight. We see in just over an our how we are all in some ways reflected in these young people who are trying to find a balance, between what is ‘right’ and what can make them happy.

We’ve done a bunch of projects together you and I” – Rosemary to Jesse when convincing him of the validity of this project.
In collaboration with the Sydney based theatre company ‘The Space Between’, Rosemary Ochtman (actor/producer), Jesse Donaldson-Jarrett (actor/producer) reprising their respective roles, have joined with a new member Luca Romani (Director) to form the production team behind this season of ‘The Way We Get By’, written by renowned American playwright Neil LaBute.
This script and those like it (in our opinion anyway) exists to hold a mirror up to audiences as they inevitably will see aspects themselves in the fragmented depictions of humanity that comes to life on the stage. This is a theme we see in a lot of humanist pieces, and we believe it to be an ever increasingly important thing to explore- humanity and the vital breath found in our connections to each other.

With them sitting down and me sitting down and the time being so constant it feels like we’re all sitting down witnessing a story occurring. The two on stage just happen to be the ones talking… and life is just happening to us all equally, which was nice.
