Written by David Williamson and directed by Kim Martin at Roleystone Theatre, Influence looks at how radio shock jocks become powerful public figures with politicians begging to be on their shows.

There’s also a nod or two to the infamous cash-for-comment deals of the late ‘90s, involving John Laws and Alan Jones.

Martin said Influence was a look into the world of radio talkback hosts and how they sway the Australian public and political scene.

“It addresses many issues that concern people in contemporary Australia, particularly those who feel their opinions are being ignored by the government,” he said.

“The matter of immigration and integration, or lack of it, is one of the major topics in the play.

“All these concerns are dealt with in the context of a shock jock’s home life, as well as radio segments including talkback.”

Attracted to Williamson’s play because of it s contemporary nature, Martin said the script dealt with issues most people have come across or have strong opinions about.

“David Williamson is without peer in his ability to capture Australian dialogue,” he said.

“The play also has a good range of characters and Williamson is at his best when dealing with family dynamics.”

Involved in theatre for more than 40 years, Martin has been an actor, director, musical director, composer, playwright, lyricist and pianist for shows in Northam, Kalgoorlie and Roleystone.
