The world’s most famous arias are ringing out from the Joan Sutherland Theatre again as Opera Australia’s enormously popular Great Opera Hits concert series returns to Australia’s true home of opera.
Described as the ‘best of opera without the boring bits’, this 90 minute show is jam-packed with tunes that most people will be familiar with and not realise they are masterpieces that are famous around the world, not just the soundtrack from a commercial.
OA has assembled an all-Australian cast to perform tunes that the audience will no doubt recognise from car and pasta adverts, along with films such as Pretty Woman and Star Trek. Great Opera Hits is a sure-fire crowd-pleaser; an entertaining concert with broad appeal that won’t disappoint.
Hosted by one of Australia’s most popular conductors and performers, Guy Noble, the show is an ideal introduction for those wanting to experience the impact and atmosphere of a live operatic performance for the first time but aren’t quite ready to commit to a ‘grand-opera’ production. Noble takes the audience through songs by some of the world’s greatest composers including Bizet, Puccini, Rossini and Verdi in a light-hearted setting, guaranteed to provide lots of laughs.
Each performance features a combination of four of OA’s finest young principal artists including Petah Chapman, Luke Gabbedy, Celeste Haworth, Simon Kim, Haotian Qi, Agnes Sarkis, Alexander Sefton, Shanul Sharma and Sharon Zhai.
Set on the stage of the Joan Sutherland Theatre, this concert gives visitors and Sydneysiders alike the opportunity to be a tourist in their own backyard and experience a taste of what all the operatic
fuss is about.
