The Dismissal Cast Announcement

Squabbalogic in association with the Seymour Centre will present the pre-world premiere of a brand-new Australian musical, The Dismissal, centred on one of the biggest political crises in Australian political history in the York Theatre from June 18-22.

The Dismissal tells the story of the most dramatic event in Australian political history, the firing of Prime Minister Gough Whitlam by the Governor-General Sir John Kerr on November 11th, 1975. In 2019, the award-winning music theatre powerhouse Squabbalogic brings the dark intrigue, larrikin humour and larger than life characters of The Dismissal to the stage in this vibrant, exuberant and rage-filled new Australian musical.

Written by Jay James-Moody and Blake Erickson, with music and lyrics by Laura Murphy, The Dismissal, promises to be the biggest political event of 2019. Squabbalogic have assembled an all-star cast including Matthew Whittet as Norman Gunston, Justin Smith as Gough Whitlam, Marney McQueen as Sir John Kerr, Andrew Cutcliffe as Malcolm Fraser and a powerhouse ensemble which includes Blake Appelqvist, Georgie Bolton, Christian Charisiou, Jodie Harris, Monique Salle and Bishanyia Vincent.

Director Jay James-Moody said, “The Dismissal is an iconic Australian moment in history and I’ve always been surprised these larger than life characters and incredible story have not been dramatized in a major theatrical production. I’m thrilled to be exploring the potential of this production with such an extraordinary team and we hope to bring audiences something between Keating (but maybe not as satirical) and Hamilton (but maybe not as earnest). Everything you will see in this show actually happened exactly the way we present it… including the singing and the dancing….”.

This pre-world premiere production provides a glimpse inside the creative process and invites the audience to participate in shaping the future of a new work. Don’t miss this limited work-in-progress event presentation as we develop, refine and redraft a new theatrical work before your eyes.
