The appetite for theatre is thriving in Canberra

The Canberra Theatre Centre (CTC) is pleased to have welcomed thousands of enthusiastic theatre goers in just the first few weeks of 2025 – as it embarks on its milestone 60th anniversary year.

The Summer Holiday Fun program, which recently ran from 16 to 25 January, is already being labelled a major success in its inaugural run, based on feedback received by many of the families who attended.

More than 21,000 ticket holders enjoyed performances held across the centre’s three venues – The Canberra Theatre, The Playhouse and The Courtyard Studio, throughout the program’s 10 day run –
with many attending sold out performances.

Held in conjunction with Canberra Museum and Gallery, Summer Holiday Fun offered experiences across Civic Square from exhibitions to a musical instrument ‘Petting Zoo’. More than 70 performances were held at CTC amounting to 51 hours of theatre on offer to local audiences.

The remarkable turnout during January in our city is evidence that Canberra’s appetite for theatre is thriving and continues to grow.

However, it’s not just children and family performances at CTC that continue to attract strong crowds. The return of music legend Dionne Warwick recently generated strong interest from both local audiences and those visiting from interstate. While this weekend’s upcoming performance by 3x ARIA award winning singer-songwriter Sarah Blasko has already sold out – proving the excitement for live performances shows no sign of slowing down.

We know there is great appetite for performing arts in Canberra and we’re proud to continue
working to ensure local audiences have the opportunity to experience the very best theatre
around.

Looking ahead, 2025 promises even more exciting performances to mark the centre’s milestone year.

Highlights already announced include the Canberra Comedy Festival, Hayes Theatre Co’s modern take on the timeless The Pirates of Penzance, Grammy-winning duo Rodrigo y Gabriela, the stage adaptation of the best-selling The Dictionary of Lost Words, and the spectacular return of The Australian Ballet with Carmen – who opened the centre in 1965.

This year is shaping up to be a celebration of all things theatre, and you won’t want to miss a moment of the action.
